The 2025-26 season has not gone exactly as the New Jersey Devils had planned. They are 28-26-2 with 58 points this season, sitting in seventh in the Metropolitan Division; they’re also 15th in the Eastern Conference. The Devils sit ten points out of the final Wild Card spot and are nine points out of the final spot in the Metropolitan Division playoff spot. On the other side, they are eight points ahead of the Rangers for last in the division as well as the conference. New Jersey plays their final game tomorrow night against the Islanders before the Olympic Break.

Today, Frank Seravalli, on his show with John Buccigross, mentioned that “While canvassing the league for the Nashville Predators GM job, there are candidates who believe there will be a GM change in New Jersey” and that these candidates are “preparing for that to happen.” Could that be the only change for the Devils? That remains to be seen, but it appears the team will let Tom Fitzgerald go at the end of the season, if not sooner. If Fitzgerald leaves, the next question is whether the team will retain Sheldon Keefe or let him go as well.

Tom Fitzgerald

The Devils named Fitzgerald assistant general manager on July 24, 2015. They promoted him to interim general manager on January 12, 2020, after the organization moved on from Ray Shero. On July 9, the team named him executive vice president and full-time general manager. He signed an extension on January 23, 2024, and with the extension came a promotion to president of hockey operations, along with keeping his general manager job. The Devils went 12-8-5 after January 12, 2020. Since Fitzgerald has taken over as the general manager, the Devils are 218-204-43. They’ve gone to the playoffs two times in that time, losing in the second round in 2022-23, and then last season, they lost in the first round to the Carolina Hurricanes.
