It’s a big weekend for sports across the nation, from the Olympics to the Super Bowl, but here in Alaska, all eyes are on a local hockey rivalry: the Governor’s Cup.

For Camden Shasby, a freshman at the University of Alaska Anchorage, this weekend is particularly special. Not only is he taking the ice for the UAA Seawolves, but he’s doing so under the watchful eye of his father, Matt Shasby, the team’s head coach.

“It’s been an absolute dream for myself to get to watch him wear the jersey and just fly around and represent the Sea Wolf family,” said Matt Shasby.

The Shasbys have a unique bond on and off the ice, with Matt having played and coached at UAA for years, including four Governor’s Cup appearances. Camden, meanwhile, has grown up playing against UAA’s rivals in Fairbanks, making this his first time experiencing the Governor’s Cup on home ice.

“I’m sure we’ll be having a beer and sitting down 10 years from now talking about it… it means a lot and I know it does to him,” Camden said.

The upcoming games mark the 30th anniversary of the Governor’s Cup at Sullivan Arena, and with the series currently tied, every pass, shot, and goal matters.

In Anchorage, hockey fans are gearing up for a family affair on the ice — one where pride, legacy, and a little friendly rivalry all come together.
