The Washington Capitals came into last night’s game looking to extend their modest three-game winning streak. Unfortunately, the Philadelphia Flyers had other plans. The Flyers gave themselves a two-goal lead in the first 25 minutes of the game, putting pressure on the Caps to make the comeback. They made a pretty good effort all things considered, tying the game just 2:40 into the third. It looked like they would keep pushing, but the Flyers got a late power play opportunity that they did not waste. Jamie Drysdale converted with just 5:23 left, restoring Philadelphia’s lead that they held onto. Let’s unpack that Flyers’ PPG…
The Flyers went on the power play after Justin Sourdif was sent to the box for hooking Travis Konecny. This penalty kill was crucial for Washington—they had the momentum, and best-case scenario would have been building even more momentum with a successful PK that led them down to the other end of the ice to take the lead. Unfortunately, it only took 24 seconds of power play time for Drysdale to find the back of the net.
The Flyers were putting the pressure on the Caps as soon as their man-advantage started. Clay Stevenson made a save on a Bobby Brink wrist shot from above the left circle, and then Konecny just missed his chance off the rebound down in front. Trevor Zegras corralled the puck down in the corner and found Drysdale just below the blueline, and Drysdale one-timed it through traffic, over Stevenson’s glove, and into the net.
Sourdif’s penalty and the ensuing Flyers’ PPG definitely took the wind out of the Capitals’ sails, and it put a stop to their comeback bid. While Washington played a pretty solid game, especially considering they just played at home the night before, it was their special teams that cost them the win.
