They made a great contract extension offer to Artemi Panarin, but the New York Rangers star still preferred a trade to the Los Angeles Kings, of which he had control over thanks to a no-move clause in his contract.
So on Wednesday, before the Olympic roster freeze, Panarin was traded to the Kings.
The Kraken were left out in the cold.
According to insider David Pagnotta, the Kraken were willing to offer a three-to-four year extension at $12 million per year.
Panarin got two years for $11 million per year with the Kings.
“Wasn’t enough to entice Panarin to change his mind,” Pagnotta wrote.

This was a complicated negotiation.
Panarin wanted an extension. The Rangers wanted a good trade return. Panarin also wanted to go to a contender.
Contenders don’t often have the necessary cap space to extend someone like Panarin, of course, making it that much more complicated and seemingly ruling out his favorite targets like the Lightning and Panthers.
In the end, the Kings got the 34-year old star who still averages more than a point per game.
The Kraken? If they want an exciting upgrade, it’ll have to come from elsewhere after the rosters unfreeze.
