The Chicago Blackhawks venture into the Olympic break with a disheartening 4-0 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Chicago Blackhawks took care of business on Monday night, defeating the San Jose Sharks by a convincing 6-3 margin. However, that energy did not follow the team to Columbus, Ohio on Wednesday.

Wednesday’s game is the ultimate let down for the Blackhawks. The Columbus Blue Jackets netted four goals, completely blanked the Hawks, and, to add salt to the wound, the Blackhawks lost Wyatt Kaiser for what is expected to be a fair amount of time.

That said, the Blue Jackets are not a punk team at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings. Wednesday marked their seventh straight win as they continue to ascend up the standings in search of a playoff spot. Unfortunately for the Hawks, they got the Columbus buzzsaw twice in three games.

In the first period, a pair of defensemen netted goals for Columbus. Zach Werenski picked up his 20th goal of the season, while Ivan Provorov picked up his sixth goal of the season. Columbus took the two-goal lead into the intermission, but that wasn’t the worst thing to happen to Chicago.

Wyatt Kaiser’s Injury

Connor Murphy was tied up with Werenski, and the contact forced Werenski into Kaiser’s leg. The way Kaiser went down is reminiscent of a ligament injury in the knee, which could spell an end to Kaiser’s season. Head coach Jeff Blashill confirmed Kaiser will miss a bit of time, and there will likely be further updates prior to action resuming after the Olympics.

If Kaiser is done for the season, the Blackhawks should still sell at the upcoming trade deadline. Open spots on the blue line can create runway for players like Artyom Levshunov, Kevin Korchinski, and Ethan Del Mastro down the stretch.

Columbus Adds On and Locks In

The Blue Jackets added another goal in the second period before locking in. Danton Heinen scored his third of the season to give Columbus a 3-0 lead. Sean Monahan added an empty net goal in the third period, but the damage was done.

Luckily, the Hawks will be plenty rested after the Olympic break. Teuvo Teravainen is the only player representing their home country in Milan. The rest of the roster will be ready to go when the Blackhawks travel to Nashville after the break.

What’s On Tap Next?

The Blackhawks will rest until Feb. 26 when they venture to Nashville to take on the Nashville Predators. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. CT.
