The Philadelphia Flyers took on Claude Giroux and the Ottawa Senators Thursday night at the Xfinity Mobile Arena in their last game before the Olympic break. Dan Vladar got the start in net. Garnet Hathaway was inserted into the lineup with Nicolas Deslauriers becoming a healthy scratch. In a game where the Flyers struggled to get anything going offensively, Jamie Drysdale saved the team by scoring late. Unfortunately, Tim Stutzle would win it for the Senators in overtime. The orange and black fell to 25-20-11 on the season.
The Flyers got the game’s first power play at the 19:19 mark of the first period as Drake Batherson was called for hooking. They had trouble setting up in the zone as the Senators gave them nothing to work with. No shots on goal were recorded.
The Senators got their first power play at the 5:52 mark of the second period as Sean Couturier got called for hooking. Vladar made a big save on Thomas Chabot, and the Flyers were able to clear the puck down the ice multiple times.
Nick Cousins gave the Senators a 1-0 lead at the 9:55 mark of the second. Vladar made the initial save on Shane Pinto but allowed a rebound. Cousins got to the rebound and put a backhander into a wide-open net. Pinto and Michael Amadio tallied assists.
Vladar was pulled with 2:14 remaining in the third period in favor of the extra attacker with the Flyers down by one. It worked as Drysdale tied the game up at one at the 18:46 mark. He took an across-ice pass from Bobby Brink and put a wrist shot under the blocker of Senators goaltender James Reimer from the left circle. Brink and Trevor Zegras picked up assists.
No one else scored in regulation, so the game went to overtime. Travis Konecny had a chance as he went on a two-on-one, but his shot missed wide. The Senators then took advantage of the miss and won the game. Tim Stutzle took a pass from Brady Tkachuk and put a backhander past the left skate of Vladar. Tkachuk received the lone assist.
Flyers went zero for one on the power play and killed off the only Senators’ man advantage.
Vladar saved 25 of 27 shots, giving him a .926 save percentage.
