For most of the game, the Philadelphia Flyers struggled to get much going offensively. Sitting on just 12 shots for much of the third period, they were in danger of being blanked in the final game before the Olympic break.
A late goal with 1:14 left got the game tied, but it didn’t help them avoid more of the same beyond regulation. Just 47 seconds into overtime, Tim Stutzle scored the game-winning goal for the Ottawa Senators, sending the Flyers to their 12th loss in 15 games going into the break on Thursday night at Xfinity Mobile Arena.
It was a low-event first period, as neither team was able to score in the opening 20 minutes. The Flyers did not record a shot on goal until 4:25 remaining in the period. Shots after the first were 8-2 Ottawa.
The Senators continued to heavily outshoot the Flyers, and finally cashed in at 9:55. Nick Cousins popped home a rebound for his eighth goal of the season to open the scoring.
Through two periods, shots were 21-8 Ottawa.
The Flyers struggled to generate much for most of the third period. But with 1:14 to play, they finally found the equalizer. Jamie Drysdale scored his fifth of the season to tie the game.
Through 60 minutes, shots were 26-13 Ottawa.
Just 47 seconds into overtime, the Senators claimed the win. A missed opportunity on a two-on-one led to a transition rush the other way. Stutzle was able to steamroll past Travis Sanheim before making the move on Dan Vladar for his 28th goal of the season.
Vladar finished with 25 saves on 27 shots in the loss. James Reimer made 15 saves on 16 shots in the win.
The Flyers now head into the Olympic break, getting several weeks off from game action. They return on Wednesday, Feb. 25, against the Washington Capitals at 7 p.m.
