The Vancouver Canucks are in the midst of their tank/rebuild, and it could result in forward Elias Pettersson being traded, but with his contract length and salary cap hit, it might too tall of a task for the Canucks to deal him.

“Pettersson could very well find his form again on a team with that much talent. The Sabres have a lot of players entering their prime years, and ready to compete. With a lot of the offensive pressure taken off him, he might actually reach the numbers he had a couple years ago. But nothing happens without Pettersson waiving his clause.”-Stinson

Elias Pettersson might be immovable for the Vancouver Canucks.

Billy Heyen of Sporting News reported on the difficult of moving Pettersson for the Canucks. It’s not just his contract length, salary and lack production, it’s all three at once. The Canucks are also expecting a lofty return for him and that can also get in the way of things.

“One, is that he has a sky-high cap hit and still has six years remaining on his contract. Two, is that his production has not improved much this season and so it’s not obvious if he’d be as significant an upgrade to another team. And, three, is that the asking price needs to be high enough to help push the Canucks forward and, likely, need to include a centre as Vancouver is thin at the position.”-Nick Kypreos

The Canucks would likely have to retain some of Pettersson’s salary if they were to trade him. But that might also convince them to hold onto him, and use him throughout the rebuild. He has a no-movement clause for now, and his term will carry him through the rebuild phase. If the Canucks cannot get a decent return for him, he’ll mostly likely be there through the hardest times for the franchise.
