A former Vancouver Canucks forward has been placed on unconditional waivers for the purpose of having his contract terminated after a tough return to the NHL.
While the roster freeze might be in effect until February 22nd at 8:59 p.m. PT, there are still some transactions that can go through as waiver-exempt players can be sent to the American Hockey League, regular waivers are still active, though if a player clears they don’t have to report to the minors until February 17th, and unconditional waivers can still be utilized too.
Given his tough situation with the New Jersey Devils, a former Vancouver Canucks forward has decided now is the time to have his contract terminated in order to pursue a new opportunity for the remainder of the 2025-26 season.
Former Vancouver Canuck placed on unconditional waivers for contract termination
According to Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman, the New Jersey Devils have placed Finnish forward Juho Lammikko on unconditional waivers to terminate his contract, which if he clears on Friday, as is expected, he’ll become an unrestricted free agent.
“Josh Davies (FLA) & Juho Lammikko (NJ) on waivers for the purposes of contract termination.” Friedman said in a post on X.
The New Jersey Devils took to social media to confirm the news a short while later and given how things have gone for Lammikko in his return to the National Hockey League, averaging 9:52 of ice time per night in 24 games, it feels like this was brewing for a little while.
“#NEWS: We’ve placed F Juho Lammikko on waivers for the purposes of terminating his contract.” the Devils said.
The 30-year-old centerman was drafted by the Florida Panthers back in 2014 and went on to suit up in 88 games for the club before he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks, along with Noah Juulsen, for Olli Juolevi in October 2021.
In his lone season with the Vancouver Canucks, the Noormarkku, Finland native registered 15 points (seven goals, eight assists), 14 penalty minutes and was a minus-six in 75 games.
It’s unclear what comes next for Juho Lammikko, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to anyone if he heads back overseas to play in either Switzerland again or potentially in his home nation of Finland, where he last played in 2019-20 for Karpat.
