Flames injury news: Jonathan Huberdeau to have season-ending hip surgery, per Friedman

On Wednesday night, Calgary Flames forward Jonathan Huberdeau played his best game in awhile, including scoring the opening goal for the club in what ended up being a 4-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers.

It’ll be his last game of the 2025-26 season, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, as Huberdeau will undergo season-ending hip surgery.

That will be his final game of the 2025-26 season. Huberdeau needs hip surgery, but wanted one final game for the Flames — and made an impact.

Well, it certainly seems that he was playing through a fairly significant hip injury – we are not doctors, but we imagine anything that requires surgery is significant – and that at least some of his challenges this season were related to that injury.

Huberdeau finishes the season, his fourth with the Flames, with 10 goals and 25 points through 50 games. Because he’s going to miss more than 10 games and 24 days, he’s eligible to be placed on the long-term injury reserve list and because his season is done, the Flames could receive the full $10.5 million in cap relief. However, the Flames have over $24 million in cap space right now, and so it’s extremely unlikely that’s an option they will need to avail themselves of.

Originally acquired from the Florida Panthers in the Matthew Tkachuk trade during the 2022 off-season, Huberdeau has five seasons remaining on an eight year extension he signed shortly after being acquired from the Flames. For the sake of everyone involved, here’s hoping that Huberdeau gets everything that’s ailing him taken care of so that he can have a better 2026-27 season.

He joins John Beecher, Blake Coleman, Sam Honzek and Jake Bean on the club’s injured list. Beecher and Coleman are expected back at some point following the Olympics.

The Flames are off for the Olympic break. They’ll be back in action on Feb. 26 when they face the San Jose Sharks.
