The NHL’s Olympic break is here, but just before the roster freeze, it turns out the Tampa Bay Lightning made one more move.

According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the Lightning have waived center Jack Finley.

Finley is a former second-round draft pick who is 23 years old.

He has played with the Lightning most of the year, although he isn’t always active, and only on the fourth line when he plays.

Finley has only been with the Lightning organization since he was drafted 57th overall (second round) in the 2020 NHL Draft.

He’s a 6-foot-6 righty, intriguing for that reason if for nothing else.

Finley had only played one NHL game before this season.

This season, Finley has gotten onto the ice for 22 games with the Lightning. He has two goals and one assist while averaging just 8 minutes and 25 seconds per game. He has 37 hits, as well.

Finley could pass through waivers and head down to the AHL.

But if another team wanted to claim Finley, they’d be getting a huge forward who was once thought highly enough of to be a second-round pick. It seems like a chance worth taking for a team in the bottom portion of the standings to potentially develop a young player.

It’s certainly a risk for the Lightning to put Finley on waivers, and they’ll have to wait and see what happens now.
