When the NHL resumes action following the break for the Winter Olympics, the push will be on for teams to make moves before the trade deadline expires. We have already seen multiple big-time trades go down this season, including Artemi Panarin going to the Los Angeles Kings and Quinn Hughes being sent to the Minnesota Wild.
Many experts around the NHL still see room for more chaos to ensue as teams gear up for the postseason run. One team that is expected to be very active on the trade front is the Montreal Canadiens, who find themselves right in the thick of things out in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
Montreal has almost everything a team needs to find success in this current era of the NHL, but it is lacking one glaring piece. The goaltending for the Canadiens has been shaky at best, and there are rumors flying around that the front office could be targeting an upgrade before the trade deadline comes to an end.
Teams can’t win a Stanley Cup without quality goaltending, and for the Canadiens, the only goal of the season is a title. Otherwise, this roster has speed and a young core that could do some real damage come playoff time, if they can get in.
With this team being right on the playoff bubble, the pressure is on the front office to make some moves for this squad. Luckily for Montreal, there are a few options that the team can make, with one stat goalie potentially being dangled in trade talks.

Jordan Binnington Sent to Montreal Canadiens
In recent weeks, there has been a certain buzz around the Canadiens and the plans to improve the goaltender situation. The team has been most heavily linked with veteran Jordan Binnington of the St. Louis Blues, who could check most of the boxes that this organization needs.
Binnington could be available with the Blues likely heading toward a roster retool, and this is where Montreal should try to take advantage. The veteran has been a proven winner throughout his career, helping the Blues win the Stanley Cup back in the 2018-19 season.
Something that this Canadiens team has been missing is a championship pedigree, and Binnington certainly has that in his game. Binnington could use a change of scenery, and playing behind a struggling St. Louis defense, his numbers have dropped.
For the season, Binnington holds a record of 8-16, with a 3.60 goals average against, and a .866 save percentage. If he were to be added to the Canadiens roster and their defensive unit, we could see him fully turn things around, getting back to being one of the stronger goalies in the NHL.
Binnington is also on the books for next season as well, scheduled to make $6 million, so this wouldn’t just be a rental move for Montreal. All in all, as the NHL trade deadline draws closer, the Canadiens are a team to massively watch for, and Binnington could change everything for this team.
