The Washington Capitals find themselves in a tough place as the NHL freeze comes about, hovering around a postseason spot. This is a farcry from where the team was a year ago when they finished the year 51-22-9, winning the Eastern Conference.

However, the team stumbled in the playoffs, and for the entire offseason, the biggest focus was on adding more offense to the team. Washington was ranked second in the NHL in scoring last season, averaging 3.49 goals per game, but in the postseason, they went cold.

Now the Capitals are seen as a middle-of-the-pack offensive team, and they have dealt with multiple injuries to their rotation. One of the biggest was center Pierre-Luc Dubois, who has been out since October after having surgery to repair abdominal and adductor muscle injuries.

As the NHL trade deadline approaches, we could see Washington look to make some moves to get itself back into firm playoff contention. Offense is the priority, but how the organization plans to go about this remains to be seen.

Washington Capitals Targeting Wings?

Capitals general manager Chris Patrick spoke on the plans for Washington ahead of the NHL trade deadline, giving more insight into his thought process.

“With as many teams in the mix right now playoff-wise as there are, I think teams are very much trying to figure out their timing and what they need to do and when they want to do it and how aggressive they get or do they stand pat,” Patrick said. “But we view our biggest need as kind of a higher-end, skilled winger, and those aren’t always available at the Deadline.

“It’s when they become available, they become available. So, we’re going to keep trying to pursue those guys if they’re out there.”

Capitals Should Trade For Steven Stamkos

One name that could make a lot of sense for Washington to consider going after is veteran forward Steven Stamkos of the Nashville Predators. Stamkos has been in the trade circles all season long, and there is still a chance that Nashville could move him before it’s too late.

While the Predators are chasing a playoff spot, Stamkos could net them some strong future assets in a trade. And for the Capitals, adding the veteran scorer could help give this team more life for the postseason.

Putting Stamkos next to Alexander Ovechkin could offer the Capitals one of the more explosive scoring duos in the league. Opponents would need to pick their poison with these two on the ice, and it could take the Washington attack to a new level.

Stamkos has had an excellent season with the Predators, putting up 27 goals and 14 assists, playing in 55 games. The veteran is on his way to a 40-goal year, and the Capitals could use his offensive production in the lineup.

The biggest obstacle in a Stamkos deal would likely be his contract, as the veteran is on the books for $8 million a season for two more years. However, this could be a way to maximize what could be the final year of Ovechkin in Washington, giving the Capitals a real boost toward another Stanley Cup title.
