Let’s tell it like it is: the Xhekaj family never stops surprising us.
Moving from 10th to 9th may seem minor, but it sends a strong message for this 6-foot-4 power forward. There’s no question his rugged style and on-ice intensity are highly appreciated by the organization.
Since the weekend, discussions have been heating up around his steady progression in Laval. With the Rocket this season, Florian has totaled 18 points in 42 games played in the American Hockey League.
There’s no way around it: his physical impact is undeniable, as shown by his 115 penalty minutes this year. He brings that battle-ready dimension that sometimes lacks in the prospect pool.
Let’s be honest, the fact that he’s already had a taste of the NHL certainly helps his case.
Florian Xhekaj’s steady rise is starting to turn heads within the Canadiens organization
Florian Xhekaj is on the rise! After being ranked No. 10 in the summer, he’s now moved up to the No. 9 spot in the Montreal Canadiens prospect rankings at the Olympic break.”

No one expects him to become a 30-goal scorer, but his effectiveness through the transition zones is solid. The Canadiens’ rebuild plan seems to be carving out a clear role for him as an energy player.
His progression is even more impressive when you look at his development over the past year. He recorded 35 points in 69 games in his first full season with the Laval Rocket.
You have to admit, the way management has handled his development so far has been surgical. He isn’t skipping steps, but he’s knocking louder and louder on the door of the Bell Centre.
Could we see the two brothers reunited on a permanent basis as early as next season? The question deserves to be asked, as Florian appears ready to take on a regular physical role.
