The St. John’s University and Gustavus Adolphus men’s hockey teams split a home-and-home MIAC series over the weekend with both games ending in overtime.

On Saturday, Feb. 7, Chris Kernan, a junior forward from Maple Grove, scored at 2:33 of overtime to give

the Johnnies

a 3-2 win at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. The win snapped a 12-game winning streak for the Gusties (9-3 MIAC, 14-6-1 overall).

The Johnnies (6-3-3, 11-6-4) led 2-1 after the first period. Senior captain Mason Campbell and defenseman George Moore III had goals for the Johnnies in the period. It was the first collegiate goal for Moore, a sophomore defenseman from Little Falls.

Freshman defenseman Ludvig Mellgren scored at 6:53 of the second period for Gustavus to tie the game at 2.

Junior Marko Belak had 30 saves for Gustavus. Senior Jon Howe had 39 saves for the Johnnies.

On Friday, Feb. 6, sophomore forward Sam Rice scored at 4:11 of overtime to give the Gusties a 5-4 win. Sophomore forward Jack Wineman had two goals, freshman forward John Johannson and defenseman Jackson McCarthy had two assists apiece and Belak had 22 saves for Gustavus.

Junior forward Jackson Bisson, sophomore forward Jordan Newpower, junior forward Jack Wandmacher and Campbell had goals for the Johnnies. Kernan had three assists, Wandmacher also had an assist and Howe had 31 saves for St. John’s.

The Johnnies play a home-and-home series this week against Augsburg (3-7-2, 6-12-3). The teams play at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 12, at the Brooks Center and at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 13, at Ed Saugestad Rink in Minneapolis.
