Changes to the Maple Leafs organization have begun.
Toronto announced on Thursday it parted ways with president Brendan Shanahan.
The move comes after the Maple Leafs lost 6-1 to the Florida Panthers in Game 7 in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Toronto held a 2-0 lead but couldn’t get the job done. Fans threw several items onto the ice at Scotiabank Arena during Game 7 and booed the Maple Leafs off the ice.
“While I am proud of the rebuild we embarked on starting in 2014, ultimately, I came here to help win the Stanley Cup, and we did not,” Shanahan said in a statement released by the Maple Leafs. “There is nothing more I wanted to deliver to our fans, and my biggest regret is that we could not finish the job.
General manager Brad Treliving will remain on the staff, SportsNet’s Elliotte Friedman reported.
Though the Maple Leafs made the playoffs in nine straight seasons, they never advanced beyond the second round.
The Leafs have had five head coaches and four general managers during Shanahan’s tenure.
The Maple Leafs now have a slew of questions to answer in the offseason. Mitch Marner and John Tavares highlight their unrestricted free agent list, while Knies will likely see some offer sheets come his way as a restricted free agent.
