A former second overall pick has been suggested as a potential trade target for the Vancouver Canucks and GM Patrik Allvin ahead of the deadline in early March.
Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin has a lot of work to do once the National Hockey League returns from their Olympic break, with the club intending on selling off their remaining pending unrestricted free agents, aside from defenseman Derek Forbort who’s done for the year with an injury.
“We are transitioning into a rebuild here, acquiring younger players through the draft. Obviously, the draft is really important for us. Since Jim and I got [here] three years ago, we’ve definitely always emphasized on getting younger.” Allvin said last month.

One other way the Vancouver Canucks could receive those asset they’re seeking without giving up much in return is by taking on a bad contract, something we’ve seen for years in the National Hockey League.
“This would be a more classical, uncomplicated cap dump. This would just be the Canucks taking on a contract that another team needs to get rid of right here, right now, and presumably being paid with a draft pick or two for doing so.” Roget said.
Laine, the 2016 second overall pick, has been out of the lineup since October 16th when he sustained a core muscle injury that required surgery, however it looks like he could be returning at some point over the next month and has already resumed skating.
Adding a player like Patrik Laine, who is an unrestricted free agent at season’s end, doesn’t do much to Vancouver’s roster because of where the club is in the standings and the fact that he probably wouldn’t return to the Canucks for the 2026-27 season, but the ability to land an additional asset or two from the Canadiens, who have plenty of draft picks and prospects, would be hard to pass up for Patrik Allvin.
The Tampere, Finland native comes with a cap hit of $8.7 million USD, so the Canucks would need to shift someone to LTIR or move someone out to make it work, but if Patrik Allvin is offered Laine, along with a second round pick for example, in exchange for a mid-round pick or future considerations, it should be a no-brainer.

Do you think the Vancouver Canucks should trade for Patrik Laine if another asset is attached to the deal (prospect or draft pick)?
