‘In my top 10 right now’: Kent Hughes earns praise for pulling off a masterstroke

The Alexander Zharovsky file is drawing attention within the Montreal Canadiens organization.
Several scouts have shared intriguing comments with Marco D’Amico, placing the winger in a potential top 10 of the 2025 draft, which calls for a serious analysis.
Selected in the second round following the Noah Dobson trade, Zharovsky is benefiting from a favorable situation in the KHL.
His current offensive production is nearly identical to that of Ivan Demidov at the same stage last year. In 44 games, he has recorded 13 goals and 23 assists, but a statistical nuance must be noted.
Zharovsky benefits from increased ice time with Salavat Yulaev, averaging 15:13 per game. He is a key figure on the power play, an element that accounts for roughly 45% of his total points.
“I’ve spoken with some scouts who told me they’d put him in their top 10 right now given the progress he’s made, how much his draft stock has risen, and how he’s developing. What we’re seeing is that many players from the 2025 class haven’t necessarily taken a step this year — we’re in a wait-and-see mode. With Zharovsky, though, yes, he’s being used in what you could call an out-of-the-ordinary role compared to 18-year-olds in the KHL, and you wonder why you would rush the process with the Montreal Canadiens. He’s playing a position right now that’s very rare, and he’ll be able to develop very well over there.”

Physical development needed for the NHL
His strong execution in tight spaces remains his greatest strength. Observers agree that his hands are among the smoothest of the last draft class.
He shows clear creativity on controlled zone entries to destabilize opponents. His puck control allows him to escape pressure even when closely checked.
However, his explosiveness on skates still needs work, particularly when changing direction. He loses some efficiency in turns, a detail that is less forgiving against NHL defensemen.
The raw talent is undeniable, but his development will be the key to his success. An additional season in Russia would allow the forward to add muscle before aiming for a top-six role with the Montreal Canadiens.
