A former first-overall pick has emerged as a potential free agent target for the Vancouver Canucks and General Manager Patrik Allvin to consider on July 1st.
The Vancouver Canucks are expected to be aggressive this summer as they look to upgrade their roster through the free agent and trade markets in order to avoid missing out on the Stanley Cup Playoffs for a second consecutive year.

As the Vancouver Canucks continue to evaluate their options to fill that hole at the second line center position, a number of intriguing players have been brought up by reporters and on Friday, a new name has emerged as a potential target for Patrik Allvin.
In an article on Canucks Army, Stephan Roget mentions former first-overall pick John Tavares as someone that the Vancouver Canucks could target, if he happens to make it to the free agent market on Canada Day.
“Tavares might be the only 2C available to the Canucks, outside of the very expensive trade options, that could truly drive his own line, something that could be necessary on a team that is also short on productive wingers.” Roget said.
Tavares, who turns 35 during training camp in September, is more than likely going to be returning to the Toronto Maple Leafs and has shared that desire to reporters after the team was eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs last weekend.
“I’m very optimistic that it can work out where I’m back,” Tavares said.
Despite Tavares wanting to stay in Toronto, if the two sides aren’t able to work out a deal and he hits the open market, Patrik Allvin should be all over this and do whatever it takes to bring him to Vancouver to form a 1-2 punch down the middle with Elias Pettersson.Tavares might be aging, but he’s still able to produce offensively at an elite level after registering 38 goals and 74 points in 75 games this season, which is something that the Vancouver Canucks will need next season, especially if they lose both Brock Boeser and Pius Suter, who are unrestricted free agents this summer.
