We will dish out some history, of course, with an upcoming guest column about the first professional hockey league, the Colored Hockey League founded in Nova Scotia. We will add some surprises to the mix this month, including a joint effort with Black Girl Hockey Club that will offer a must-have swag item.
Expect comprehensive coverage of Willie O’Ree’s No. 22 Boston jersey retirement Feb. 18 before a Bruins home game against New Jersey. O’Ree, the first Black player in the NHL and still an active and official league ambassador for access to the sport for players and fans of color, has inspired generations of athletes, including members of our staff. We will roll out tributes and background on O’Ree’s career, plus live social media coverage of the big night in Boston.
Later in the month, tune into to our special Black History Month virtual panel featuring a variety of exciting guests (more info to come soon!). The group will address growing access to the game and take questions from fans. There will be more from us, too – and don’t forget to check out NHL.com for more stories. Happy February!
