Roman Josi was named captain of Team Switzerland for the Olympics Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026.

Josi, who is captain of the Nashville Predators, has the most points (763) and assists among Switzerland-born players in NHL history (562). He ranks second in games (1,007) and fourth in goals (201).

“It’s a huge honor, you know?” Josi said at practice Wednesday. “Just representing your country at the Olympics is a huge honor, and being able to captain the team is pretty special, it’s pretty cool.”

The 35-year-old defenseman has 39 points (11 goals, 28 assists) in 45 games this season, his 15th in the League. He won the Norris Trophy as the best defenseman in the NHL for the 2019-20 season.

Josi played for Switzerland in the 2014 Sochi Olympics and has played in the World Championships nine times. He is a three-time silver medalist (2013, 2018, 2024) and helped Team Europe finish second at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.

Nico Hischier (New Jersey Devils), Kevin Fiala (Los Angeles Kings), Nino Niederreiter (Winnipeg Jets) and Andrea Glauser (HC Fribourg) were named alternate captains for Switzerland.

“The whole [leadership] team we have like – ‘Hischy’, Nino, guys who are captains on their other teams, it’s makes my job a lot easier, but it’s definitely a huge honor.”

Hischier, the captain of the Devils, has 42 points (19 goals, 23 assists) in 57 games this season. The 27-year-old has 464 points, which rank fourth all-time among Swiss NHL players, and his 190 goals rank fifth. The center became the highest-drafted Switzerland-born player in NHL history when the Devils selected him No. 1 in the 2017 NHL Draft. He won silver with his country at the 2024 and 2025 Worlds.

Fiala has 40 points (18 goals, 22 assists) in 56 games this season. The 29-year-old forward is second among Swiss players with 528 points and third with 229 goals. He won silver at the 2018, 2024 and 2025 Worlds.

Niederreiter has 19 points (eight goals, 11 assists) in 55 games this season. His 1,024 games and 248 goals are the most among Switzerland players and his 499 points are third. The 33-year-old forward played for his country at the 2014 Sochi Olympics as well as the Worlds nine times, winning silver in 2018, 2024 and 2025. He also helped Team Europe finish second at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.

Glauser, a 29-year-old defenseman, has 12 points (two goals, 10 assists) in 28 games for HC Fribourg this season. He played at Worlds the past four years, winning silver twice.

Switzerland, which is in Group A, plays its first game of the tournament against Team France on Thursday (6:10 a.m. ET; Peacock, ICI Télé, CBC Gem, SN).
