The Philadelphia Flyers have had their share of point-getters over the course of their history, even if some of those players haven’t been seen in some time. Whether it was Eric Lindros, Rick Tocchet, Claude Giroux, Mark Recchi, John LeClair, or Tim Kerr, several Flyers have had games where everything went right from start to finish. Here then are the top three single-game performances from Flyers over this history. These are in no particular order and there are also an honorable mention.
Eric Lindros — February 26, 1997 vs. Ottawa
Lindros was at his height as as Flyer in this injury-plagued season. Despite only playing 52 games, The Big E ended up with 79 points, so his point-per-game pace was just over 1.5. Not bad. But nothing compared to this one game where the Flyers played the Senators. On a night where both Paul Coffey and Janne Niinimaa had four-point games, Lindros ended up with a goal and six assists for a seven-point night. The Legion of Doom — Lindros, LeClair and Mikael Renberg — tallied 16 points between them in what was a wild, high-flying barnburner of a first period.
The LOD scored 70 seconds into the contest to take a 1-0 lead as a Renberg shot was tipped or redirected to LeClair who buried it. But it would be one of four leads the Flyers would have over the course of the 60 minutes. Ottawa tied it up 10 seconds later. Lindros then won a faceoff rather handily just inside the Ottawa blueline where Paul Coffey fired a rocket that made the Senators goalie Ron Tugnutt duck for cover. The shot was high but just under the crossbar. Yet the prettiest play of the night might have been the secondary assist Lindros got on Philadelphia’s third goal. Lindros crossed the blueline before turning around and making a dazzling cross-ice pass to Renberg. Working like a line oozing moxie, oomph, and chemistry, Renberg fed LeClair who made no mistake. By that time the Flyers were up 3-2, and the game wasn’t quite seven minutes old.
After a 4-4 tie after one period, Lindros had four of his six assists. His lone goal would be a nice tap-in off a pass from defenseman Peter Svoboda which tied things up at 5-5. Philadelphia scored the ensuing three goals, the second of which was the lone goal that Lindros didn’t contribute to as Renberg scored on a pass from LeClair. And his final point of the night was an assist on LeClair’s 40th goal of the season.
Rick MacLeish — March 4, 1973 vs. Toronto
Winger Rick MacLeish was one of the cornerstones of the Flyers’ success throughout the ’70s and Philadelphia’s heyday. In his first full season with the team (1972-73), MacLeish scored 50 goals, and had an equal amount of helpers to hit the century mark. And it was during this 1972-73 contest against Toronto where he ended up getting seven per cent of his season point total. The Flyers beat Toronto, trouncing them by a 10-0 score. Perhaps the oddest part of the night for MacLeish was he only had one of his seven points (four goals, three assists) in the first period.
In the middle frame the Flyers blew the game open to a 7-0 lead, with MacLeish getting a point on each goal, scoring twice while getting primary assists on goals by Bobby Clarke and Gary Dornhoefer. And in the third, he scored his 42nd goal of the year to make it 8-0 before earning a secondary assist on the tenth and final goal Philadelphia scored. It was one of those nights everything went right for the team and MacLeish who had nine of the team’s 41 shots on the evening.
Tom Bladon — December 11, 1977 vs. Cleveland
Tom Bladon is rarely compared to the immortal Bobby Orr. Yet Bladon has one noteworthy record which has yet to be eclipsed by another blueliner in the National Hockey League. On Dec. 11, 1977, Bladon had an incredible eight-point night with four goals and four assists. Philadelphia destroyed the Cleveland Barons 11-1. Bladon scored his first of four goals at 17:54 of the first. But within the following 44 seconds, he added two secondary assists on goals by Don Saleski and Mel Bridgman who scored with 25 seconds of each other.
During the middle frame Bladon completed his hat trick with consecutive goals to make this game turn from a 5-0 laugher into a 7-0 rout. And in the third he managed to pot his fourth of the night while earning a pair of assists on goals by Rick MacLeish and Bill Barber. The Barons managed to break Bernie Parent’s shutout bid by scoring their first of the night with 75 seconds left in the third. As if the eight points weren’t enough of a highlight, Bladon also ended the game with a ridiculous +10 in the plus/minus category. That stat remains an NHL record for a single game.
In March of 1986, Paul Coffey (then with Edmonton) scored a pair of goals and added six assists to tie Bladon’s record. But nobody has yet to surpass that number. As for Bladon, he ended that season with 35 points (11 goals, 24 points) in what was his final season with the Flyers. After two seasons in Pittsburgh, Bladon had very brief stints with Edmonton, Winnipeg and Detroit before calling it a career in 1980-81.
Honorable mention: Kevin Dineen — April 15, 1993 vs. Buffalo
Thirteen times a Flyer has reached six points in a game. Eric Lindros did it twice as did Bobby Clarke. But perhaps none were more impressive than Kevin Dineen’s half-dozen points against the Sabres late in the 1992-93 season. Dineen had a hat trick in the game to go along with three assists. But no other Flyers in this elite club managed to record his hat trick by scoring a power play goal and not one, but two, short-handed tallies. Dineen’s first short-handed goal made it a 3-0 lead for Philadelphia. Yet the Sabres stormed back to tie things up 3-3 after 40 minutes.
In the third, Dineen had primary assists on the first and last Philadelphia goals of the period, the first by Pelle Eklund and the finale by Keith Acton. The middle pair was a power play goal by Dineen with Rod Brind’Amour earning a primary assist. Less than two minutes later, Dineen earned his second short-handed goal with Brind’Amour again getting the primary assist. The Flyer ended up with eight of the 26 Flyer shots on this night as Philadelphia defeated Buffalo 7-4.
