The soon-to-be home of the Calgary Flames is seemingly making progress each and every day.

Scotia Place, which is expected to be ready for the 2027-28 season, started being built in the summer of 2024. What began as nothing more than a hole in the ground is quickly starting to take shape, looking more like an NHL arena by the day.

At the end of January, Scotia Place’s official Instagram account released several new exciting updates on what has taken place as of late.

Not only does the structural steel now reveal the overall shape of the arena, but precast concrete to put together the inner design of the building has gotten underway.

“The precast forms the inner bowl of the arena structure,” said CANA construction manager Stewart Kohnen. “The precast comprises of the walls, floors, and seating area that the fans will actually sit on during the games. It takes the building from a skeleton into an overall functional arena facility.”

There are thousands of precast pieces being delivered by over 900 truckloads from central Alberta. It’s been a very efficient job by construction crews so far, and they expect progress to continue moving along at a rapid pace.

“Fans will look forward to seeing a significant change in the project over the course of this year. We’ll have structural steel activities continuing, with the introduction of building envelope beginning very shortly. From that point forward, we’ll start putting a roof on the structure, and the interior works will continue to progress.”

Once completed, this new facility will feature both indoor and outdoor gathering spaces. One of the outdoor gathering spaces will have a large viewing screen that will serve as the home of the Calgary Flames Red Lot.

Scotia Place will also have a community arena with bookable times for renting ice in the evenings and on weekends. The community arena will fit up to 1,000 people.

Though there is still plenty of work to be done on this project, it looks as though Scotia Place is well on track to be the new home of the Flames for the 2027-28 season and far beyond.
