The New Jersey Devils’ management decided Wednesday to place forward Marc McLaughlin on waivers.

The move aims to assign the 26-year-old to their AHL affiliate, the Utica Comets.

The Canadiens, who currently hold a 32-17-8 record, could technically show interest in stabilizing their depth. Kent Hughes is closely monitoring the market to find low-risk options ahead of the trade deadline.

McLaughlin is currently in the final year of a one-season contract worth $775,000. He will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the current campaign, which would make a potential acquisition easier without long-term commitment.

Statistically, the big forward has not played a game with the Devils this season. Over his NHL career, he has totaled 6 goals and one assist in 28 appearances, primarily with the Boston Bruins.

Despite limited offensive production, McLaughlin is known for his solid execution and ability to deliver heavy hits. His profile as a sturdy center could provide a physical option on a fourth line.

An expected decision for the 26-year-old center

Montreal’s management must evaluate whether his size can bring a needed dimension for the stretch run of the season.

With injuries piling up, reinforcement capable of shutting down opposing attacks carries some value.

We can agree that the financial risk is nonexistent for a team with available salary cap space.

Fans will know by Thursday at noon whether the Canadiens have decided to claim this asset to strengthen their lineup.
