A National Hockey League insider has shared a very bold take regarding the Vancouver Canucks’ J.T. Miller trade with the New York Rangers in January 2025.
Since the trade, the Vancouver Canucks and New York Rangers have both struggled, as they missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2025 and now sit at the bottom of the Western and Eastern Conference standings, respectively.
This year has been very tough for J.T. Miller as he’s taken on the added responsibility of being a captain for an Original Six franchise in their 100th season and at times, has frustrated the team’s fan base with his post-game comments, such as last week when he was asked about what the message is heading into the Olympic break.
“I don’t know. We need to come back with a better mindset. It hasn’t been good enough the last little while, so just try to regroup and freshen up. I don’t know. We just need to enjoy or take time – I literally don’t know. Come back with a better mindset I guess.” Miller said.

Even if given the opportunity, it’s unlikely that the Vancouver Canucks would want a do-over of last year’s trade with the New York Rangers as it helped them land a decent piece in Victor Mancini, who will play a key role during the team’s rebuild.
While making an appearance on DFO Rundown on Monday, NHL insider Jeff Marek said that he thinks the J.T. Miller trade between the Vancouver Canucks and New York Rangers was the worst in National Hockey League history.
“Jeff Marek calls JT Miller to the New York Rangers the worst trade in the history of the NHL. Both teams are worse since the trade happened.” NHL Trade Alert said on X.
“This lack of leadership is a recurring theme for this player and shows why Vancouver made the right choice to trade him. Obviously, while in Vancouver, he had a bad relationship with Pettersson, which led to his trade. But he also had multiple other public disagreements with players on that team.” Lukas Bernasiewicz of The Hockey Writers shared.
In 48 games with the Rangers this season, Miller has tallied 36 points (14 goals, 22 assists), 16 penalty minutes and is a minus-22.
