A former fifth overall pick has been suggested as a possible trade target for the Vancouver Canucks and age-wise, he fits in with Patrik Allvin’s rebuilding plans.
In an ideal world, Patrik Allvin and Jim Rutherford will be able to sell off all of those pending UFAs, a list that includes Evander Kane, David Kampf and Teddy Blueger, but they could look to do more on the trade front with some other players that have been drawing interest lately, including Conor Garland.
The one thing that Allvin and Rutherford need to remember leading up to the trade deadline on March 6th is to take into consideration their rebuild and only make deals that they believe will benefit the organization on a long-term basis and recently, a former top-five pick has been mentioned as a potential option for the club.
Former fifth overall pick named as potential trade target for Vancouver Canucks
Hayton’s age would fit in really well with the Vancouver Canucks’ rebuilding plans and he could easily slot into a middle-six role with the club, however as Dayal and Drance mention, it’s not going to come cheap.
“At issue for the Canucks in pursuing Hayton is that he’d have real cache and trade value for a number of teams around the league, including contender-level teams. Centres come at a significant premium cost, and there’s a fair bit of regard for Hayton around the industry given his versatility, face-off winning ability, power-play utility and doggedness.” Dayal and Drance said.
Hayton, a native of Peterborough, Ontario, had a strong season for Utah last season, setting career highs in goals, assists and points, but this year, his production has dropped off a bit, registering just 21 points (7 G, 14 A) in 52 games thus far.
The cost to acquire someone like Barrett Hayton, who the Mammoth still have a lot of faith in, is going to be a lot and with the Vancouver Canucks trying to accumulate assets (draft picks & prospects, preferably) for their rebuild, it might be tough for Patrik Allvin to bring in the 2018 fifth overall pick.
