The Winter Olympics are underway in Italy and it’s nice to see Buffalo stars contributing. Last week it was Amherst native Haley Scamurra scoring twice for the women’s team in their opening game. Today it was one of the Buffalo Sabres showing off his skills.

Tage Thompson scores for Team USA

Today was the start of Men’s hockey at the Olympics for Team USA as they took on Team Latvia. With just over 2 minutes left in the 2nd period, USA was on the power play when Buffalo Sabres’ star Tage Thompson snuck one past the goalie on a pretty goal.

Kind of weird to hear that it was Eichel that fed it to Thompson.

The game is not complete as of the writing of this post. It’s currently 3-1 for Team USA as they head into the third period.

The upcoming schedule for Team USA

This was the first preliminary game for Team USA. They still have two more games scheduled for this weekend. They will take on Team Denmark on Saturday, and Team Germany on Sunday. If they are able to win their group, they will earn a bye into the next round.

As I write this post, Germany is playing team Denmark and Germany leads 3-1.

This is the first year NHL players have played in the olympics in decades

In 1998, NHL players were allowed to play in the Olympics for the first time. That continued for a couple of years. However, in 2018 in PyeongChan and again in Beijing in 2022, the NHL bowed out. This is the first time they’ve been able to play there in decades.

Team USA will be back on the ice Saturday at 3:10 pm local time (9:10 pm in Italy).
