The Vancouver Canucks list of legends isn’t too long yet given the age of the franchise, but Roberto Luongo is definitely one of them, and he was recently one of the very few goaltenders to make the top 50 all time CHL best players list.
“Of course. I mean, I love Vancouver too. Brad and I had our battles, that was 15 years ago, we have to be able to move on and he’s a great player obviously and an even better teammate, so we’re just happy to have him on our team. We saw what he did on this run, not only on the ice, but in the locker room, on the bench, everywhere. He was a huge add to our team.”-Luongo
Roberto Luongo adds another milestone to his legacy.
Dylan Nazareth of Canucks Army reported on the recent published list by the CHL. Luongo is only one of six goaltenders who made the list, and he is with elite company. Luongo played with the Val D’Or Foreurs and the Titans de Acadie Bathurst during his time in the QJMHL.
“Landing on the list is legendary former Vancouver Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo. Luongo spent four seasons in the QMJHL from 1995-1999, playing with the Val-d’Or Foreurs and the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. Luongo is one of six goaltenders on the CHL’s Top 50 list, including Martin Brodeur, Marc-André Fleury, Grant Fuhr, Carey Price, and Patrick Roy.”-Nazareth
Luongo was thend rafted fourth overall by the New York Islanders, only to be traded to the Florida Panthers shortly after. He was then traded to the Canucks in 2006, and was a runner-up Vezina candidate in his first season with the team. But his most memorable season was losing in the Stanley Cup Final in 2011 to the Boston Bruins. Luongo finally got his Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers and won it a second time back-to-back for good measure. Luongo will not only be remembered for what he meant to the city of Vancouver but his time in Major Junior as well.
