One trade proposal is a potential return that the Edmonton Oilers would have to pay up for Oliver Ekman-Larsson.
A report checks any thoughts that Edmonton Oilers fans may have had that Oliver Ekman-Larsson could be an easy get for the team.
According to David Pagnotta of ‘The Fourth Period’, a return for Ekman-Larsson would not be something along the lines of Andrew Mangiapane and a pick, but closer to involving Isaac Howard.
Howard, 21, is the Oilers top prospect, and has appeared in 28 games for Edmonton this season, and in the AHL has 12 goals and 30 points in 18 games in the minors.
Mangiapane, 29, has six goals and 12 points for the Oilers this season, in the first year of a two-year contract at $3.6M annually. Mangiapane was drafted by the Calgary Flames under current Leafs GM Brad Treliving.
Oilers return for Ekman-Larsson would likely have to include top prospect Howard
If the Toronto Maple Leafs want Oliver Ekman-Larsson, they’d have to give up their top prospect in Isaac Howard.
Ekman-Larsson, 34, leads all Leafs blueliners with 26 assists and 34 points, named to Sweden’s roster at the World Juniors.
Howard has just five points in 28 games for Edmonton, but as a rookie shows potential as a top-nine winger, with top-six upside.
Ekman-Larsson is not the only Leaf linked to Edmonton. Forward Bobby McMann has also been linked as a potential option for the Oilers, and someone who could net the Leafs a first round pick.
Leafs fans had been discussing the potential in recent over the logic of a 1-for-1 deal involving McMann for Howard, something that has been met with mixed feelings from fans.
Oliver Ekman-Larsson is someone less discussed in trade talks involving the Leafs as opposed to McMann, but if McMann would go for a first or a top prospect such as Isaac Howard, Toronto could get a real haul out of Ekman-Larsson.
For a team like the Leafs lacking top prospects and draft picks, Toronto’s best outcome is getting all the help they can get in immediately high-upside future options.
