Kings forward Kevin Fiala had to be stretched off the ice during after he suffered an injury during Switzerland’s 5-1 defeat against Team Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Per Switzerland Head Coach Patrick Fischer, reported by Nick Cotsonika off NHL.com, Fiala was taken to the hospital after the game. As later released by the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation, Fiala has been ruled out for the tournament with a lower-leg injury.
Switzerland coach Patrick Fischer on Kevin Fiala, who was stretchered off with a left leg injury: “We haven’t seen him yet. I think he went to the hospital. Obviously, it doesn’t look very good. Tough, tough, tough moment for Kevin and the whole team, obviously.”

Late in the third period, Fiala went down along the boards after an awkward collision with Washington Capitals and Team Canada forward Tom Wilson. After he was down on the ice for an extended time, Fiala was eventually taken off the ice on a stretcher, with the entirety of Team Canada looking on and tapping their sticks on the ice. Included in that group was goaltender Darcy Kuemper and defenseman Drew Doughty, Fiala’s teammates with the Kings. Doughty was hunched over as Fiala left the ice and appeared to be quite upset for a friend and a teammate in Los Angeles, noting that he said something to Fiala as he left the ice in a show of support, hoping to connect with him as soon as he could after the game.
Drew Doughty on his Kings teammate Kevin Fiala:
“Tough to see. Hopefully he’s gonna be fine quick, we need that guy on my team back home, big-time. That’s not something I wanted, obviously, to happen. Gonna go find him right now and see how he’s doing.”

On a personal note, man this sucks for Fiala. Had the chance to chat with him before he left for the games and you could tell how excited and passionate he was about playing in the Olympics and playing for Switzerland. Switzerland is a small yet proud hockey nation. This is their best group they’ve ever sent to the Olympics and Fiala was a key player on that team. With the NHL pulling player participation in 2018 and 2022, this was his first chance to play on this stage, best-on-best. To see this happen in just his second game, just gutted for him.
Fiala’s Swiss teammate, New Jersey center Nico Hischier, said that there was “clearly no intent” to injure on the play, as per Mark Lazerus of The Athletic, reporting on site in Milan. Here’s what Wilson had to say following the play –
Tom Wilson: “It’s the Olympic Games and I feel terrible that he may not be able to keep playing. Just sending his family and him my best. You never want to see a guy go down, in a tournament like this, especially.”

As for what this means going forward, beyond the Olympics, there’s currently no update beyond the lower-leg injury. Will update this story with future reports on Fiala’s condition if any additional updates arise.
