The 2024 draft could prove to be a major turning point for the rebuild led by Kent Hughes.

The Ontario forward no longer looks like the player selected 78th overall last summer. Let’s be honest, his physical transformation is impressive right now, now measuring 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds.

His offensive production reflects a technical maturity quickly developed in the NCAA. In 27 games this season, Sawyer has recorded 12 goals and 11 assists for a total of 23 points.

His impact goes far beyond the scoresheet thanks to a robust and committed style of play. The 19-year-old admits he possesses a natural edge — a trait highly valued by Montreal’s management.

His partnership with John Mustard, a Blackhawks prospect, consistently energizes the Friars’ offense. Sawyer uses his hockey IQ to slow the pace and effectively orchestrate zone entries.

“Canadiens prospect Logan Sawyer has been a different player for Providence leading them in scoring this year.

After adding 25 lbs, growing to about 6’3, and refining his shot, he’s playing like a power-forward that has that “F U” in his game.”

A potential pillar for Montreal’s offense

Rob Ramage and Adam Nicholas are closely monitoring his technical development on the ice. The focus is on his ability to create space before firing his shot from the faceoff circles.

At this pace, Sawyer could quickly climb the ranks within the Canadiens’ prospect hierarchy. His blend of vision and physical strength represents exactly the type of supporting forward Montreal needs.

“I think I’ve just gotten comfortable with the speed of everything. I think I’m able to slow down the game a lot. I think I have really good hockey IQ, so I’m able to see what’s open kind of before other guys see what’s open.”

The Orangeville native is proving that patient development in the college system can pay dividends for the organization. His transition to professional hockey looks promising if this upward trajectory continues through the end of the season.
