Germany went into the Olympics hoping a good showing would bring attention to the sport in that soccer-mad country.
A loss to Latvia Saturday surely got fans attention, but noit in the wy they had hoped.
Dans Locmelis scored twice as Latvia pulled out a 4-3 victory, damaging Germany’s prospects for medal contention in Group C, with a game against the United States next on the schedule.
TIME ON ICE
Red Wings defenseman Moritz Seider was on the ice for 27:41, second only to forward Leon Draisaitl on the German team. He was once again paired with Fabio Wagner to start.
PRODUCTION
Seider got off three shots and was +1.
GAME NOTES
It was only the second Olympic matchup between the nations, coming after a 4-1 German win at Salt Lake City in 2002, and only the second Latvian win this century against the Germans. It was Latvia’s first Olympic win since 2014.
ANALYSIS
It was a game Germany needed, but couldn’t capitalize on. Germany’s coach and players thought it played the better game, but it was Latvia that celebrated on the ice long after Germany had retreated to its locker room.
NEXT GAME
Germany plays USA at 3:10 p.m. EST Sunday.
