While most eyes have been on the Olympic games, Detroit Red Wings top prospect netminder Sebastian Cossa competed in his second AHL All Star Games this week, as the young goalie has been backstopping the AHL’s best team with a 20-4-2 personal record, as the team leads the league with a 36-7-2-1 record.
While the Central Division didn’t win the round robin style tournament between the four split teams, Cossa was able to put on a good show in his events, which are often geared against netminders. Cossa finished the night stopping 3/5 attempts in the Breakaway Relay and stopped several of former Griffin Matt Luff’s shots in the Rapid Fire Contest. The Rapid Fire is especially hard on a netminder, switching between blocking shots from two people within ten feet of either side of the net.Â
Grand Rapids Griffins captain Dominik Shine, who has played with the team for ten seasons now and made his NHL debut last year in early January. Shine was named as one of the alternate captains for the central, and is in his first year of being a captain for the Griffins, with 29 points in 32 games. Forward John Leonard missed the All-Star Classic due to an injury, and has been missing since the break has finished and regular games have resumed.
