Will Connor McDavid break the Olympics point record?
For the first time in his career, Connor McDavid is participating in the Winter Olympics for Team Canada.
The Edmonton Oilers captain is on a mission to bring home the gold medal. He was named an alternate captain alongside Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche. Pittsburgh Penguins icon, Sidney Crosby, is leading Team Canada as captain.
McDavid is very close to breaking an NHL player record for Team Canada during the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Connor McDavid Has Broken Team Canada Record
Heading into Canada’s game against France, McDavid was tied for the lead in points with six. Juraj Slafkovsky of the Montreal Canadiens was the only other player with six points for Team Slovakia.
Before the 2026 Olympics, Jonathan Toews held the record for the most points by a player at the Olympics featuring NHL players (Toews was playing with the Chicago Blackhawks at the time). Jarome Iginla of the Calgary Flames, Joe Sakic of the Colorado Avalanche, Ryan Getzlaf of the Anaheim Ducks, and Crosby have all finished with seven points during a single Olympics.
After recording three points in Canada’s game against France, McDavid has now broken the Team Canada record.
Who Has the Record for the Most Points During a Single Olympics?
When it comes to NHLers at the Olympics, there are other players who have surpassed eight points in the tournament.
Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu hold the record of 11 points. After them, Daniel Alfredsson and Marian Hossa (who were teammates for the Ottawa Senators) both recorded 10 points during a single Olympic year. All four of these players hit these point totals during the 2006 Olympics.
However, the record for most points by a single player ever in one Olympics was Harry Watson for Team Canada.
Watson played only five games and scored 37 points at the 1924 Olympics.
With three points in this game against France, McDavid is getting closer to the single-game record for points. Pavel Bure holds the record for the most points in a single game, with five, scored in a semi-final game at the 1998 Olympics for Team Russia.
In terms of round-robin play, Ilya Kovalchuk holds the record with four points in 2006.
Another Connor McDavid Record
According to NHL Public Relations, McDavid set a record for the most points through the first three games of an Olympics involving NHL players.
Additionally, after recording his seventh assist, he is tied for the second-highest assist total in a single Olympics tournament with NHL players. It’s safe to say McDavid was eager to participate in the 2026 Olympics.
Team Canada will be in action next on February 18th, 2026.
They will finish the preliminary round as one of the top four seeds. Because of that, Team Canada will play next during the quarter-finals, which will take place on the 18th.
With goal differential being the tiebreaker, every goal scored is important in the preliminary round. Team Canada and Team USA will finish the preliminary round as the top two teams. However, heading into the game against France, Canada had a goal differential two points higher than the USA.
Canada finished the game with 10 goals, so Team USA would need to score 12 to finish the preliminaries with the same number of goals.
