An Eastern Conference team remains in hot pursuit of Vancouver Canucks forward Elias Pettersson, but one major hurdle remains if Patrik Allvin wants to trade him.
Vancouver’s trade chips can be broken up into three categories: very likely, possible and unlikely, with the team’s pending unrestricted free agents falling into the first one, some veteran players like Conor Garland and Jake DeBrusk would be in the second, while someone like Elias Pettersson probably slots into the third one.
“Obviously, every club in the National Hockey League has untouchables, but management of the Vancouver Canucks is now using the rebuild word, so they have to be open for business, open for just about anything, and that might include finally trading Elias Pettersson. Now, we know that there’s been a ton of speculation from a media perspective on Pettersson’s future with the Vancouver Canucks. That was more into the off-season, more last season than to this point.” Dreger said.

Since the Vancouver Canucks became open to parting ways with Elias Pettersson, several teams have been linked to the Sundsvall, Sweden native, including the Carolina Hurricanes, who are looking for some help down the middle as they try to finally get over the hump and into their first Stanley Cup Final in two decades.
“And, three, is that the asking price needs to be high enough to help push the Canucks forward and, likely, need to include a centre as Vancouver is thin at the position. A tough trade to make in-season, but Pettersson is very much out there and the interest from Carolina is not going away.” Kypreos said.
After struggling in his first two games at the 2026 Winter Olympics, Pettersson stepped up in a big way on Saturday, picking up a pair of goals to help Sweden defeat Slovakia.
There’s no doubt that the Carolina Hurricanes would’ve been impressed with that performance from Pettersson yesterday and if he’s able to continue to play that way for the remainder of the Olympics, perhaps they might step up and make a formal offer for him before the trade deadline.
