This is the big news of the weekend for the Montreal Canadiens family.

Brendan Gallagher and his partner, Quebec native Emma Fortin, are expecting their second child.

The mom shared the news on Instagram with photos of the couple. We can agree it’s the kind of dose of love that comes at just the right time.

We have to call it like it is, his level of play is declining. The 33-year-old veteran is showing a more subdued presence on the ice at the Bell Centre.

Fortunately, the Olympic break will allow him to recharge a bit. Montreal’s current record shows the team needs a boost to finish the season strong.

With a contract that expires after next season, the future is unclear. At his age, seeing his family grow often changes an athlete’s priorities.

There are 25 games left on the schedule to prove he still has gas left in the tank. He has never been surrounded by this much talent, but his role is shrinking.

Simply put, the idea of seeing him sign anywhere other than Montreal seems impossible. With two young children, stability in Montreal will likely become his top priority.

We hope this news gives him a boost for the final stretch. Fans still love his heart, even if his legs don’t move quite like they used to.

Congratulations to the parents on this new chapter beginning away from the rink.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on things through the end of the regular season.
