A Vancouver Canucks prospect is continuing his torrid pace in the Ontario Hockey League with the Niagara IceDogs, proving that GM Patrik Allvin has struck gold.
After moving their first and second round picks during the 2023-24 season, the Vancouver Canucks went into the 2024 NHL Entry Draft with just five selections, their highest being 93rd overall in the third round.
Thanks to their scouting staff, who put in countless hours on the road and away from their families to identify future talent for the club, the Vancouver Canucks walked away with some solid prospects from that draft class including Anthony Romani and Melvin Fernstrom, the latter of whom was dealt to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Marcus Pettersson trade.
Vancouver Canucks prospect Riley Patterson continuing torrid pace in the Ontario Hockey League
One week ago, Riley Patterson set a new career-high in points and tied his career-high in goals during a game against the Guelph Storm, but he wasn’t done there.
As the week went on, the Burlington, Ontario native continued to produce and despite their 9-1 loss to the North Bay Battalion on Sunday afternoon, Patterson picked up yet another goal, giving him 31 on the season, along with 69 points in 46 games.
“Tough day for the Niagara IceDogs, but that didn’t stop Riley Patterson from producing something.
He nets his 31st goal, 69th point of the season. #Canucks” Dave Hall of Canucks Army shared.
Coming into action on Monday afternoon, Patterson sits seventh in the Ontario Hockey League in points, seven back of New York Rangers prospect Nathan Aspinall, and is seventh in goals.
“We’ve been impressed with his IQ and play-driving flashes, too. He doesn’t play a pacey game with the puck on his stick, but he slows things down and uses crafty hands and cerebral play to make things happen. He reads plays well and quickly finds the open seams, providing quick-touch passes to the open man. Impressively, 24 of his 38 assists have been primary.” Dave Hall said about what he likes in Riley Patterson’s game.
Patterson will need to continue this level of play throughout the final month of the regular season to ensure that the Niagara IceDogs are in a good position heading into the OHL Playoffs.
