Going up to the NHL for the first time with the Detroit Red Wings was certainly an eye-opening experience for Nate Danielson.
“Everyone’s so good there and yet every day, it’s about coming to the rink and getting better,” Danielson said of life in the world’s best hockey league.
“I feel like just the details in which they practice and play it. I think those details are something to keep in your everyday life, both away from the rink and at the rink.”

In life, progress isn’t always linear. There are going to be bumps along the journey. How you navigate those detours often determines how successful you’ll be at reaching your desired destination.
The ninth player chosen in the 2023 NHL entry draft, Danielson’s first taste of the NHL was bittersweet. He got there for 28 games with Detroit. However, his 2-5-7 numbers and minus-seven rating ultimately dictated that returning to the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins for further seasoning was in order.
“It’s disappointing,” Danielson readily admits. “Obviously, everyone gets sent down, but I mean, you can either dwell on it, be negative, or just use it as motivation.
“I feel like, I think now it’s just kind of a motivation thing where you want to prove that you belong there and get back there as fast as you can.”
Griffins See Different Danielson Since His Red Wings Stint
Both Danielson’s coach and his teammates are seeing a different player since he dropped back down to the AHL.
“You go up there, you probably are picking guys’ brains,” teammate Amadeus Lombardi said. “The game is probably a lot harder and faster.
“You come down here, everything’s a little bit slower. You have more confidence, and you can see it in him. And obviously, for me, I’m asking him questions. Sometimes you don’t want to overload the guy, but just ask him how certain things are, what the difference is.”

In GR, Danielson is nearly a point-per-game player. He’s showing 3-11-14 totals in 17 games with the Griffins.
“You can see the confidence in him,” Griffins coach Dan Watson said. “He’s still an extremely responsible player.
“I think there’s still some growth in his game that will come. But we trust him with any situation – faceoffs, big moments in games, whether it’s power play, penalty kill, five-on-five situations, teams’ top lines, it doesn’t matter. We’re comfortable throwing him out there.
“That says a lot for his age, his pro experience. I think that NHL stint that he had, it was a long one. That’s just going to help him grow and realize how hard it is to play at that level consistently.”
Danielson Working To Get Better
As for what he needs to do to get back to the show, Danielson doesn’t pinpoint one factor.
“I don’t know if there’s one specific thing that I’m missing,” Danielson said. “I feel like just kind of a bunch of things. Just get better, be a better skater, get stronger, get bigger, get faster.
“I think having that experience will help me next time I go. Knowing what to expect and just the details that they play with. I feel like talking to (Detroit coach) Todd (McLellan), giving me feedback on what to get better at helps. There are always things that you learn and can take with you.
“I feel like I am where I am for a reason and just have to use those experiences to help me and continue to get better.”
