Team Canada coach Jon Cooper caused a little stir back home when Nathan MacKinnon and Sam Bennett were absent from practice, and Cooper did nothing to clear up the situation, instead keeping his lineup for the quarter-final under wraps. The medal rounds begin today. The Pittsburgh Penguins got plenty of good news at practice with the return of Filip Hallander and Kris Letang. We also provided an honest profile of two Penguins prospects trying to make their way back to the NHL and where their games currently stand in that pursuit.
Elsewhere in the Daily, the NHL trade chatter was out west with the LA Kings’ options to replace Kevin Fiala and the Vancouver Canucks finding suitors for Evander Kane.
Do I watch Team Canada today or go to Penguins practice?
Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Kris Letang is a magic healer, and Filip Hallander is on his way back. Surprises on both accounts and the full story from Penguins practice.
Now, I really dug into it. I think two prospects in danger of being left behind are Owen Pickering and Ville Koivunen. So, we had a chat with both in Wilkes-Barre, but also asked coach Kirk MacDonald about them, and told you what I saw from them, good and bad, too. Here’s a hard look at two Penguins prospects.
Shelly Anderson chipped in some offense Tuesday, too. Dan Muse made some promises in training camp. How’s that working out for the coach and the Penguins?
NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now
NHLtraderumors.me: All of the Evander Kane trade chatter. Donnie and Dhali got into it from the Vancouver perspective and have a couple of suitors (Colorado, LA), and why a trade should happen, but why it will be tough.
The Province: Ben Kuzma reports the LA Kings may have an interest in the Canucks’ mercurial center Elias Pettersson, and they have the cap space to do it.
San Jose Hockey Now: Jeff Skinner wants to play. Despite scoring six points in six games coming out of the holiday break, he found himself with a plate of pressbox nachos for 10 straight games. He cleared waivers, and now he’s a free agent. Sheng Peng has a deeper dive and comments from the now former San Jose Sharks winger.
TSN: Team Canada goes this morning against Czechia. The juggernaut has been rolling, and Sidney Crosby did his best to put over Connor McDavid on Tuesday with some hefty compliments.
Sportsnet: Jon Cooper is quiet. Toooo quiet. What will today’s lineup be? The mystery for Team Canada.
New Jersey Hockey Now: Interesting. Here’s how Simon Nemec became the top defenseman at the Olympics.
Philly Hockey Now: Will James took questions from Flyers fans, which is always a dicey proposition. From the goalie situation to finding a 1C on the NHL trade block, it’s some hefty Flyers analysis.
It seems a lot of you liked Will when I had him on the recent No Pucks Given podcast. I’ll have him on more often. No, I didn’t do one this week, because, well, I didn’t.
Colorado Hockey Now: Aarif Deen also dug into the figurative mailbag for some fun. The Colorado Avalanche have been the juggernaut of the 2025-26 season, but they have a couple of needs, so Deen teed up the Avalanche trade potentials.
