The Vancouver Canucks organization has announced a trade this week involving a former NCAA and QMJHL goaltender with the club in need of help between the pipes.
This week, we’ve seen quite a lot of movement on the goaltending front at all three levels of the Vancouver Canucks organization, whether it be the big club or their two minor league affiliates in Abbotsford (AHL) and Kalamazoo (ECHL).
“General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that G Aku Koskenvuo has been recalled from Abbotsford (AHL) under emergency conditions. He will practice with the #Canucks while Kevin Lankinen is competing at the Winter Olympics.” the Canucks said on X.
The move caused a bit of a trickle down effect too as the Abbotsford Canucks called up Ty Young from the Kalamazoo Wings, while the ECHL club needed to search externally for help in net and opted to go down the trade route.

In a press release on Tuesday afternoon, the Kalamazoo Wings announced that they’ve acquired goaltender Tyriq Outen from the ECHL’s Wichita Thunder in exchange for future considerations.
“The Kalamazoo Wings, proud ECHL affiliate of the National Hockey League’s Vancouver Canucks, announced the acquisition of rookie goaltender Tyriq Outen from the Wichita Thunder for future considerations Tuesday.” the club said.
Outen, 25, has spent his career all over North America, serving as the primary backup for the QMJHL’s Acadie-Bathurst Titan during the 2018-19 season where he had a 0-20-0 record along with a 5.89 goals against average and an .861 save percentage.
Last season, the Tampa, Florida native made the jump to the NCAA where he suited up in 14 games with Long Island University and played very well, sporting a 1.93 GAA, a .920 save percentage and two shutouts.
Ahead of the 2025-26 campaign, Outen decided to turn pro and has split his time this season between the ECHL’s Wichita Thunder and SPHL’s Knoxville Ice Bears.
Outen will likely serve as Jonathan Lemieux’s backup this evening as the Kalamazoo Wings get set to take on the Cincinnati Cyclones on the road, with puck drop set for 4:35 pm PT (7:35 pm local).
