After closing out group play with a commanding 5-1 win over Germany, the Americans earned a quarterfinal bye and now face Sweden in a marquee knockout matchup in Milan.

It was Team USA’s most complete performance of the tournament to date, highlighted by a two-goal, three-point effort from captain Auston Matthews and a sharp showing from Connor Hellebuyck in net.

Earlier today on the other side of the quarterfinal bracket, Canada edged Czechia 4-3 in overtime, setting up a potential gold medal final between the North American rivals should both advance.

For now, all focus is on Sweden, a skilled and structured opponent loaded with NHL talent.

Olympic hockey follows IIHF rules, not NHL rules.

Any player who starts or participates in a fight is assessed a major penalty and a game misconduct.
