Gabe Landeskog became the second Avalanche skater to be eliminated from the Olympics.
Following Sweden’s 2-1 overtime loss to Team USA, Landeskog, like Martin Necas, is heading back to Denver in short order. The Avalanche and Swedish captain helped his team force OT with a late game-tying goal before Quinn Hughes scored for the Americans to end it in the 3-on-3 period.
USA outshot Sweden 6-0 in OT.
The Americans held a 1-0 lead through two periods thanks to Dylan Larkin. His tally came in the second period and was assisted by both Quinn and Jack Hughes.
The Swedes had several opportunities to tie it up but couldn’t solve Connor Hellebuyck. Late in the third, Adrian hit a one-timer off the post. But on the very next shift, Landeskog sent a pass to Lucas Raymond. The Red Wings forward made a spectacular no-look pass through the seam to find Mika Zibanejad. He blasted a one-timer past Hellebuyck with goalie Jacob Markstrom on the bench for an extra attacker.
Landeskog’s tournament ends with two goals and two helpers in five games. The Swedes will go home without a medal or an opportunity to play for one.
Meanwhile, Brock Nelson and the Americans advance to a semifinal matchup against Slovakia. The other matchup for an opportunity to play for the Gold Medal will be between Canada and Finland.
