MILAN — Sidney Crosby isn’t being ruled out of the Olympics by Team Canada but his status moving forward remains unclear.
“Sid is by no means ruled out of the tournament,’’ Team Canada head coach Jon Cooper said Thursday. “We’ve got the best of the best looking at him. … We’re taking this day by day. And we’re not going to put anyone in harm’s way. But if he can play, he’s definitely going to. We’ll know more again in 24 hours.’’
Crosby underwent testing to see what the severity of his lower body injury was. A league source told The Athletic that Crosby is doing all that he can in an attempt to play again in this tournament but it’s not clear if that will be possible.
Crosby was hurt midway through the second period during Canada’s 4-3 overtime win in the quarterfinals Wednesdsay when veteran Czech defenseman Radko Gudas came to finish his check on him between the benches. Crosby tried to duck the hit; his legs split and Gudas seemed to topple over him. His right leg bent awkwardly.
“I was just trying to hold the red line,’’ Gudas said postgame. “Just trying to play hard, everybody is playing physical. … I’m not sure (what happened). That team is so fast, so quick, you worry about the next shift, the next play. Hopefully he’s OK. You never want to see a guy get hurt, especially in these tournaments.’”
Crosby, 38, has two goals and four assists in now parts of four games these Olympics. The Pittsburgh Penguins star has seven goals and nine assists in 17 career games in the Olympics, leading Team Canada to gold at the 2010 and 2014 Olympics.
“Guys just have to step up, but he’s still around us and stuff. We don’t even know if he’s playing or not,’’ Drew Doughty said after practice Thursday. “But he’s still around doing his leadership thing. But we got guys that can step up and fill the leadership void, obviously it’s impossible the player void. But we’ll do our best.’’
“He’s Sidney Crosby,’’ Connor McDavid said Thursday. “He’s gonna have a big influence, no matter what. In the lineup, not in the lineup, he’s gonna have a big influence. That’s what he does.”
As per international rules, Team Canada would have to put the captain’s ‘C’ on another player Friday if Crosby can’t go. But Cooper wouldn’t tip his hand on that because he hasn’t ruled Crosby out.
