The Grand Rapids Griffins have been more challenging to play against this season, particularly in the third period, and goalie Sebastian Cossa (15th, 2021) has been a big reason why.
Cossa made 22 saves, including eight in the third period, to help the Griffins down the Cleveland Monsters 3-2 at Van Andel Arena Wednesday night. His record is now 22-4-2. Fellow Detroit Red Wings first round pick Michael Brandsegg Nygard (15th, 2024) notched the game-winning goal on a pass from Ondrej Becher.
Now four months beyond his 20th birthday, Brandsegg Nygard has put up 27 points (nine goals, 18 assists) in 43 games with the Griffins. Becher has quietly showed improvement this season. The young Czechia player has 22 points (six goals, 16 assists) in 43 games. Nate Danielson set up a first period goal by Dominik Shine to give him 15 points (three goals and 12 assists) in 18 games this season. Since being sent back to Grand Rapids in January, Danielson has 10 points in 14 games.
Pinckney native Shine now has six goals and seven points in his past three games. The Griffins have now won four in a row and six of their last seven games. They are 28-0 when scoring the first goal of the game.
Red Wings In Case You Missed It
Detroit captain Dylan Larkin scored big goal in USA’s overtime victory over Sweden. He has been an essential performer for the Americans in Italy.
Defenseman Simon Edvinsson needed knee surgery to get back in the lineup.
Lucas Raymond is an avid reader when he is not piling up points for the Red Wings.

John Leonard was still out of the lineup when the Grand Rapids Griffins downed the Cleveland Monsters Wednesday. He has not played since Jan. 30 because of an undisclosed injury. Thus far, he has missed seven games. The Griffins still believe this is a short-term injury. …Former Red Wings Petr Mrazek, now with the Anaheim Ducks, is out for the season after hip surgery. He is 3-5 this season.
