The Dallas Mavericks will open their three-game road trip Friday night against the Minnesota Timberwolves with nine players listed on the injury report, including leading scorer Cooper Flagg.

Flagg (left midfoot sprain) has been ruled out. Max Christie (left ankle sprain), Daniel Gafford (right ankle injury management), and Caleb Martin (left ankle sprain) are listed as questionable. Moussa Cissé, Miles Kelly, and Ryan Nembhard — all on two-way contracts — are doubtful. Kyrie Irving (left knee surgery) and Dereck Lively II (right foot surgery) remain out for the season.

Dallas enters the matchup at 19-35 overall and 5-19 on the road after dropping nine straight games before the All-Star break. With multiple rotation players uncertain, Friday’s availability report could significantly alter both the starting lineup and frontcourt depth.

Cooper Flagg’s Absence Continues to Reshape the Offense

Flagg’s injury dates back to a Feb. 11 loss to the Phoenix Suns, when he exited after 36 minutes with 27 points and five rebounds. An MRI confirmed the left midfoot sprain, and he was ruled out for the Mavericks’ final game before the break against the Los Angeles Lakers as well as the Castrol Rising Stars event.

Through 49 games, Flagg is averaging 20.4 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists in 34.1 minutes per game while shooting 48.2% from the field and 80.4% from the free-throw line. His 999 total points lead the team.

Head coach Jason Kidd has described Flagg as “day-to-day” regarding a potential return during the road trip, but for now, Dallas must continue adjusting without its primary offensive engine.

Frontcourt Outlook If Daniel Gafford Cannot Play

Dallas started Brandon Williams, Naji Marshall and P.J. Washington against Los Angeles, with Gafford anchoring the interior. If Gafford proves unable to play due to right ankle management, the Mavericks’ options at center become extremely thin.

Marvin Bagley III and Dwight Powell would be the only remaining healthy big men on standard contracts. Bagley has appeared in three games, averaging 10.7 points and 8.0 rebounds in 23.0 minutes. Powell is averaging 2.9 points and 3.6 rebounds in 13.5 minutes per game.

Without Gafford — who is shooting 63.2% from the field and averaging 6.5 rebounds — Dallas would lose its most efficient interior finisher and rim protector. That scenario would likely require heavier small-ball minutes for Washington or Marshall, further taxing wing depth.

Wing Rotation Impact If Max Christie or Caleb Martin Sit

Christie suffered his left ankle sprain during Thursday’s practice after landing on a teammate’s foot, according to Kidd. He is averaging 13.3 points per game while shooting 42.6% from three-point range, giving Dallas reliable floor spacing.

Martin missed the Mavericks’ final game before the All-Star break in Los Angeles due to the same left ankle sprain that now has him listed as questionable again.

If Christie or Martin cannot play, Klay Thompson and Khris Middleton are natural candidates to shoulder more responsibility.

Thompson is averaging 11.6 points per game and has made 2.9 three-pointers per contest, while Middleton, still acclimating to the team, could see expanded minutes as a secondary playmaker and half-court stabilizer. Dallas may also lean more heavily on Tyus Jones in multi-guard lineups to maintain ball movement.

Against the Lakers, Dallas shot 7-of-26 from three-point range and committed 15 turnovers. If perimeter depth shrinks further, maintaining spacing and ball security becomes even more critical.

Kyrie Irving Officially Ruled Out for Season

Irving confirmed during the All-Star break that he will not return this season as he continues rehabilitation from ACL reconstruction surgery.

“This decision wasn’t easy, but it’s the right one,” Irving said. “I am grateful for the Mavericks organization, my teammates and our fans for their continued support throughout the process. I am looking forward to coming back stronger next season. The belief and drive I have inside only grows.

“And I wanted to send a huge shoutout to ALL of my brothers and sisters out there who’ve torn their ACL or gotten injured doing what they love to do every day. THANK YOU for the inspiration. No fear!”

With Irving and Lively already sidelined long-term, Dallas’ margin for error remains narrow entering the matchup in Minnesota.

Dallas Mavericks Searching for Stability Against Minnesota

Before the break, Kidd emphasized that health remains the foundational priority.

“I think one, is we just have to get healthy,” Kidd said. “That’s just something that has been part of our DNA here for the last two years. It’s just a lot of injuries, and hopefully we can come out of this break healthy and ready to go.”

Friday’s 6:30 p.m. CT tipoff represents Dallas’ first opportunity to reset following the All-Star pause. Whether that reset includes Gafford, Christie, or Martin could significantly shape the rotation — and determine whether the Mavericks can halt their nine-game skid on the road.
