The NBA and NHL are in a unique position to help the Twin Cities, the state of Minnesota, and the leagues’ suffering country. The organizations’ Minnesota Timberwolves and Minnesota Wild have ongoing seasons in the Twin Cities. That’s where ICE personnel shot and killed Renee Good and Alex Pretti and mistreated others. The NBA and NHL ought to take a stand against this type of behavior by ICE. I’m not saying they even speak against ICE’s role in any deportations of individuals who aren’t violent criminals.
The NBA advocated for Black individuals after George Floyd was murdered by Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin in 2020. I hope for the same advocacy from any league with Minnesota teams that has a season currently running.
A message on the Wolves’ court and Wild’s ice and words on their jerseys, like the NBA did for Floyd and Black folks, would be wonderful.
It would also be appropriate for the Big Ten to get involved. The conference is a primary one for University of Minnesota Gophers athletics.
