The NHL’s Blue Jackets and NBA’s Cavaliers will almost certainly need new local television homes for next season.
Owner Main Street Sports Group notified the state of Ohio that it is shuttering the FanDuel Ohio office in downtown Cleveland and laying off 27 employees who work there, effective April 14 – the same day as the Blue Jackets’ regular season finale against the Washington Capitals. The Cavs regular season schedule ends two days prior with a tipoff against the Washington Wizards.

Is there a chance FanDuel Sports Network remains in business?
Although it’s possible FanDuel could continue operating, it’s unlikely. The network, formerly Diamond Sports Group, has been on this trajectory since emerging from bankruptcy in January of last year. It had a suitor in DAZN, a U.K.-based sports network that was in talks to purchase the struggling group of regional sports networks, but a deal never materialized by last month’s deadline.
DAZN has been looking to get a foothold in American sports leagues and has interest in the rights of the 13 NBA and seven NHL teams that air games across the network. However, according to a Sports Business Journal report, that would require those teams to take a hefty revenue cut in that portion of their business.

FanDuel plans to continue airing games through the end of the regular season.
What does that mean for the future of local Blue Jackets broadcasts?
The Blue Jackets, when informed of the layoffs, pointed to a statement they shared on Jan. 30.
“We are continuing to work with FanDuel Sports Network to provide fans with the best Blue Jackets game coverage,” Blue Jackets vice president of communications Todd Sharrock said at that time. “Our priority always has been making sure our fans have the ability to watch our games, and we will be prepared to ensure that continues in the future.”
It’s unclear what contingencies the Blue Jackets are considering, but last season, the team began simulcasting select games on CW Columbus (53.1) plus Sinclair/Gray Media stations throughout Ohio and bordering areas of West Virginia and Kentucky.

What does it mean for the future of local Cavs broadcasts?
In the near-term, playoff broadcasts will not be affected, a Cavs spokesperson confirmed. While it was common practice for the league to allow local TV partners to air some playoff games – usually in the first round – the NBA ended that policy last year, meaning all playoff games will be found on national TV outlets: ABC/ESPN, Amazon Prime Video and NBC/Peacock.

As for the future, it remains to be seen.
The Cavs have options, the first one being the Rock Entertainment Sports Network, a local TV station that begin airing local sports programming in August of 2024. The station has simulcast some Cavs games in the past two seasons. RESN is run in partnership with Gray Media, an Atlanta-based media company that also owns and operates WOIO (Channel 19), a CBS affiliate, and WUAB (Channel 43), a CW affiliate.
Could they move the games to RESN or WUAB, which is more likely than WOIO because of network agreements? It’s possible.
Any such move could represent a one-year bridge, however.

The NBA wants to launch a national regional sports network for the 2027-28 season, according to reports. The possible shuttering of Main Street would make such an enterprise more likely, giving them the rights to up to 20 NBA teams. Would it hasten the launch of such a network?
At this point, only the NBA knows.
