Kiefer Sherwood has only played one game for the San Jose Sharks, but he’s already feeling better about his new team.
After missing time with an upper-body injury, Sherwood skated on a line with Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith against the Colorado Avalanche. Sherwood told SHD that skating in practice now is the best thing for him to get closer to his new teammates.
“You get a taste of it. Be back with the fellows finally, and then have to sit on that one for three weeks,” Sherwood said. “I know we were all pissed off after the game, but the break was coming at a good time for us, so we’ll regroup here and be ready to go now.”
Former teammate with the Vancouver Canucks, Vincent Desharnais, told reporters when Sherwood was acquired that the new Sharks winger can be a prankster. Sherwood admitted that he’s starting to feel comfortable enough to “get under some skin” when the time is right.
“I’m still getting used to the energy and the fun and the banter and the celebrating and stuff, but I think it’s great. Guys bring a lot of great joy, and they have fun practicing, which is a key part to a good team,” Sherwood said. “I’m just trying to get myself immersed with this group here and get up to speed here with the guys, and just try to join in and have some fun a little bit. Get under some guy’s skin here and there. So I’ll try to ruffle some feathers when the time is right.”
SHD asked Desharnais if the San Jose Sharks winger has played any pranks yet.
“I think he’s going slow. He came in. He was hurt a little bit, and so I think he’s on the slow pace,” Desharnais said with a smile. “But I could see already, he’s getting more and more comfortable.”
Sherwood told SHD that exploring San Jose during the break has been one of his favorite pastimes. The San Jose Sharks winger shouted out Mendocino Farms and the Westfield Valley Fair Mall as frequent stops for him.
“With a week here still until the next game or whatever, get to explore the area a little bit. Try to drive around and get to know some of the spots here,” Sherwood said. “When you’re on the road, we usually just post up at the hotel. But now, you get to see the greater San Jose area, and it’s cool. It’s great.”
Sherwood Hockey Company and Sherwood the Hockey Player
It is no secret that the hockey gear company, Sherwood, would have the easiest partnership with the San Jose Sharks forward. The winger has been using the company’s gloves for quite some time but is now testing their sticks.
A deeper dive into Sherwood’s gear choice, with a Sharks Equipment Breakdown, will hopefully be out soon, with the Sharks winger talking through it. For now, this is what he had to say about his name.
“It’s funny how things work. Maybe it’s meant to be at times,” Sherwood said. “I know I’ve been using the gloves a little bit this year, and they have a great feel. I’ve been trying out their sticks now. It’s a historic brand, and it’s great to see them come back.”
Sherwood has slowly returned to the NHL after being an iconic name for a very long time. Top NHLers like William Nylander, Matthew Tkachuk, and Connor Bedard are among the biggest names partnering with Sherwood.
The Sharks winger has swapped between CCM and Sherwood this season, but one thing remains consistent: the stick’s kick point. Sherwood is using a mid-kick stick, as confirmed by the player, and says his namesake’s stick has “good pop.”
