It sure felt like Team Canada’s path to pursue gold was going to follow the same blueprint as the Quarterfinals. Less than a minute away from another overtime, the lethal Team Canada power play took care of business.

Team Canada advanced to the Gold Medal Game in a 3-2 comeback win over Team Finland. Team USA advanced later on Friday afternoon with a 6-2 win over Team Slovakia, setting the stage for Sunday morning’s final matchup.

Travis Sanheim – Team Canada

Team Canada fell behind 2-0 on goals by Sebastian Aho and Erik Haula. A deflection goal by Sam Reinhart got Canada back to within one going into the third period.

On the tying goal with 9:26 to play in the third, Travis Sanheim picked up the primary assist as Shea Theodore scored to even things at two.

With 2:35 to go, Niko Mikkola took a high-sticking penalty to put Canada on the power play. Nathan MacKinnon scored the game-winning goal with 35.2 seconds remaining to give Canada the 3-2 win.

Sanheim finished with the assist, three shots on goal, and was a plus-1 in 12:38 of ice time.

Rasmus Ristolaine – Team Finland

The pursuit of gold ended for Rasmus Ristolainen and Team Finland in the 3-2 loss to Canada. Ristolainen was a plus-1 in 20:37 of ice time.

Finland will play Slovakia for the bronze medal on Saturday afternoon at 2:10 PM.

Team USA

After a narrow 2-1 overtime win over Sweden in the Quarterfinals, Team USA was in total control against Slovakia in the Semifinals. Dylan Larkin kicked things off with the opening goal at 4:19. Tage Thompson scored on the power play in the final minute of the first period.

The 2-0 lead held past the midpoint of the second period, when a pair of goals by Jack Hughes and Jack Eichel separated by 19 seconds turned the game into a rout. Jack Hughes added a second goal late in the period, and Brady Tkachuk scored in the third to cap the scoring for the US. Juraj Slafkovsky and Pavol Regenda scored for Slovakia.

Team USA is back in the Gold Medal Game for the first time since 2010, when they claimed the silver medal. It will also be Team USA’s first medal in men’s hockey since 2010.
