Former Toronto Maple Leafs teammates of Mitch Marner spoke on the former Leafs’ game-winning Olympic goal vs Czechia.
Mitch Marner’s overtime winner in Canada’s 4-3 victory over Czechia helped break the perception that has been built in Toronto about Marner’s ability to come up in big moments.
Silencing critics over Marner’s postseason play with a clutch goal in the spotlight, it’s another major moment for Marner in the Canadian jersey after having the game-winning assist at the 4 Nations last season.
Members of Team Canada showered praise on Marner following the goal, noting that he came through when it mattered for the Canadians.
Marner’s former Leafs teammates themselves were ecstatic at the forward’s big goal for the Canadians, expressing their excitement at Marner’s play.
John Tavares praised Marner, impressed by Marner’s puckhandling and skating ability on the goal, praising his fellow Canadian for his creativity.
Hell of a play by Mitchy, one-on-three, to split all three and his ability to put the puck in the right place at the right time, recognizing where the goalie was and then to step up in a big moment. Heck of a win.
Matthew Knies also gave his props to Marner, calling the goal ‘surreal’, and calling Marner an ‘unreal player’, highly impressed by his former teammate’s goal.
It was cool. I mean what a play, that’s pretty surreal. There’s not many players in the league or the world that can make a play like that. Seen it before at the Four Nations and now see it again. He’s an unreal player and it’s fun to watch.
Mitch Marner still loved by Leafs teammates despite departure
The idea that Leafs players had turned on Mitch Marner for the saga that built up to him leaving Toronto for the Vegas Golden Knights is shown to not be the case.
It was evidently clear that Marner still had close friends in the Leafs roster as players continued to praise the former Leaf, as well as Marner likewise.
In Marner’s return to Toronto earlier in the year, one that had a very audible negative response from Leafs fans, multiple players had expressed that Marner is a friend, with their negativity on the matter coming more from the consistent media discussion on his exit.
Leafs fans in Canada, assuming a grudge isn’t being held, were surely for the first time this season cheering for Mitch Marner as he proves wrong his negative big moment status.
